We’re looking forward to introducing you to Vincent Mattina. Check out our conversation below.
Vincent, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Riding my e-bike!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Vincent Mattina I am an established multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intricate connections between spirituality, environmentalism, and the evolving landscape of technology. I graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design with a degree in Illustration. My mediums are digital art, mixed media, and assemblage. I would describe my work as Surrealism. My art is characterized by a dreamlike and mysterious whimsy, transporting viewers to alternate realms where science, nature, and the spiritual intersect.
I often focuses on the critical theme of climate change, prompting viewers to consider its potential consequences. Another highlight of my work is the ongoing series “Sleepless”, where I show a personal reflection on my sleep disorders and bring them to life. This series creates a strong connection between consciousness and floating, dreaming and drowning, even sleep and death.
I have exhibited extensively, including at the San Diego Art Institute, Brand Library, Southampton Art Center, and in Utah at the Springville Museum of Art, Bountiful Davis Art Center, Finch Lane Gallery, and Urban Arts Gallery. My work has been featured online at 15 Bytes, KUER.org, and Times of San Diego.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mother, She gave me the most encouragement in my family. I had uncles and cousins that could draw and paint but none of them ever parlayed their talent into a career. My mother was a pattern maker and then clothing designer. She was my biggest creative influence.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I always had a fear of being accepted for myself. I wouldn’t say it held me back my whole life just up to college. During collage I met people that were more odd than I was and that inspired me to just be myself.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Family, friends, relationships. I would say my chose friends word agree with that.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
I think I regret not ditching my day job earlier in life to pursue art full-time doing festivals and galleries.
