Today we’d like to introduce you to Bev Robison.
Hi Bev, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I graduated from high school, my parents gave me a simple gift. The old family camera. It was an all-metal, fully manual, film-operated Nikon. I didn’t have a clue what to do with it. So, I took it on adventures and hikes and to favorite places around town, and took a lot of bad photos. Overexposed, underexposed, out of focus. But every once in a while, I would capture something AMAZING and would wonder to myself “how did I do that?” It wasn’t until I had my first child a few years later that my love affair with photography really began. I desperately wanted to be able to capture my babies just how I saw them. It didn’t always work out. But after a few years of practicing, trying, and learning all that I could, something beautiful started to appear in my film rolls. Something I could be proud of. I’ve now been shooting professionally for about 16 years, and my Nikon collection continues to grow! I love the places photography has taken me, and the beautiful people that I’ve met along the way!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Just like any other creative professional, I’ve made my fair share of mistakes along the way. Something that I’m constantly guilty of is over-scheduling myself. I want to create as much as possible, to the point where I reach “burn out” and struggle to stay on top of post-processing. It’s so important to stay focused on real priorities, like family time and self-care. I have to remind myself constantly to take regular breaks, block out dates, and keep a consistent schedule to avoid late nights and feelings of being overwhelmed. I love what I do, and it’s my goal to continue loving what I do for many years to come.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I believe there is beauty in everything, and being able to capture that in individuals, and in families is something that I’m passionate about. Your life is your story. I love documenting exciting family events, like weddings, new babies, and graduating seniors. But I also specialize in family photos. I love being able to document connections, relationships, and the beauty that is unique to each family group. I take pride in being able to make my clients feel comfortable during their photo sessions with me, and actually feel like they’re having fun! And I want their photos to appear just that way: comfortable, natural, and fun! A photograph is just the beauty of life’s journey, captured. And if I can help people to see how truly beautiful they are, then I feel like I’ve done my job right.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
As a photographer, 99% of what we achieve is based on hard work and talent. And then there is that 1% that is purely based on luck. In my profession, our luck (bad or good) goes by another name: weather. Haha! Since a majority of what I shoot is outdoors, it is often weather dependent, as you can imagine. And with a full work calendar, it’s often difficult to reschedule. Mother Nature rules supreme in the photography business! Thank goodness she is kind to us most days here in Utah.
