Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacey Love.
Hi Lacey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started in the barber industry 11 years ago, fresh out of cosmetology school. I realized very quickly that women’s hair was not something I wanted to make a career doing. I learned that I have a major love for barbering, and everything that goes along with that. I’ve managed multiple shops since then and always looked forward to having my own place in the future. I finally went out on my own at the end of 2019, right before COVID hit and we were locked down.
I made it through, and have now been open for over 2 years. Currently, I have a one-chair barbershop, with plans to grow in the future. I love my career, and can’t imagine doing anything else.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Every time a barber leaves a shop, we basically have to start over and build a new clientele. I have done that multiple times now.
Every time that happens, there is a fear that people won’t follow or come to us. The other tough part has been getting through the pandemic. I’ve never had so many clients move in one year. Men are coming in less often, and some are cutting their own hair since they are working from home.
I also had a family hardship this past September, when my two youngest children were hit by an SUV while they were walking to school, leaving me with massive hospital bills that just keep piling up. Thankfully, they are recovering and doing great now, but it really stopped me dead in my tracks and was hard to overcome personally as well as professionally.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My career usually falls under the creative/artist umbrella, but for me, barbering isn’t really creative.
I’m a very analytical person, and I pride myself on doing precision haircuts. I use the geometry of the head to create the best haircut/style for each person that sits in my chair. I specialize in precision cuts and close, yet comfortable shaves, and my interesting decor. The thing I’m most proud of is that I have always grown most of my clientele by fixing bad haircuts they’ve previously gotten.
I’ve had people following/ seeking me out every time I have changed shops because they trust my work, and don’t want to take a chance on a new barber. I am known for being very meticulous, yet easygoing to be around.
What do you think about luck?
I don’t really believe in luck, to be honest. I work hard for everything I get, and sometimes good and bad things happen and you just have to work around it and keep pressing on. I don’t give up, and that’s how I think people eventually become successful.
You just keep going until you reach your goals, no matter what.
