Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Cooper.
Hi Lucas, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
This band started as a simple concept when I was all the way back in the eighth grade. I knew that I wanted to write and create music, and that I wanted the things I was feeling to be shared out into the world because I knew somebody out there could relate. I’d talk to a few friends of mine about the ideas I had, and the vision I had for a band, including things such as: the name, the sound of the music, the aesthetics of things, and how far I could envision it going. I knew that my music had potential from the moment I started writing and got compliments from people who didn’t even know me. Having the drive and passion for this music brought it truly to life, it forced me to learn how to produce and mix my own tracks while still being a broke (then high school) college student and I get to look back every time and see the amount of growth I’ve had while doing it. Now, the band is to the point where we have started to actually bring the songs not only out into released tracks, but also onto the stage and in front of live audiences where people are choosing to come listen and feel the music in the moment. It truly has become bigger than I had imagined initially, and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road getting to this point. Between financial struggles, the process of burnout and having to come back from it, and issues between myself and other band members, the road has been windy and sometimes difficult to navigate. As I’ve gotten older and learned from mistakes I’ve made when it comes to creating the tracks for the band, it has become easier to get things to the point they need to be in time and professional sounding. The most difficult part at this point of the process is trying to market our music in more of a condensed area, rather than spread out across the entire country, as well as attempting to get ourselves up on the stage.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the leading frontman of the band Lost in the Forest, based out of Denver, Colorado. While the members on stage with me shift around from time to time, I am the sole member of the project. I write, produce, and mix all of the tracks primarily in my basement studio. While some may find this difficult to create, I much prefer the creative process of being able to completely build the tracks from scratch on my own. I am self taught on every instrument I play: piano, guitar, bass, drums, and occasionally the ukulele, so this means I get to have full control over how a track flows and sounds. I love to work with others on the tracks after I’ve created the baseline ideas, but pretty much everything you hear on the studio works is created by myself, with the lead guitar parts being done by Jake Miltenberger.
I take the most pride in our most recent record ‘BLEACH’, as it was entirely written and produced in my basement in the span of a year. My vocals and production on that record took a major step up, and constantly receive compliments on how it sounds like it was recorded professionally. This, for me, drives my inspiration to continue to grow and learn more, as I enjoy working with other artists and want to be able to help bring their ideas to life as well in the future. Being a producer as well as an artist gives me a big leg up compared to many, as I am able to see the tracks from both sides and see how the vision blends together between both. Using both of these capabilities sets Lost in the Forest apart from others as it not only is present in the studio, but is also present within the ideas of the live shows and how we are presenting ourselves for the world.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck, in my opinion, has played a major role in my life and within this band. We all face challenges in life and feel like we have bad luck when multiple happen back to back, but I try to take a more optimistic perspective when it comes to situations like this. Every bad thing that I’ve experienced when it’s come to my life has guided me closer and closer to bringing my dreams to life, which in turn makes it feel almost like good luck rather than bad. I am lucky to have had the ability to learn the instruments that I have, and also being able to produce the music that I create. Good luck has also brought the band to playing live shows, creating new songs that we love, and being able to create without consequence.
