Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Kristensen.
Mark, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Established in April 2001, Angel’s Hands Foundation (AHF) is committed to enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by rare or undiagnosed medical conditions. The organization was founded in honor of Matt, whose journey with a rare medical condition inspired AHF’s mission; his legacy continues to guide its work. Following Matt’s passing in 2002, his family’s experiences became the driving force behind AHF’s initiatives to support other families.
Initially serving 10 Utah families impacted by MPS, AHF has expanded to assist approximately 900 families managing over 200 distinct medical conditions, while maintaining a focus on supporting the Utah community.
Since its inception, AHF has operated exclusively through volunteer efforts, with approximately 95% of all expenditures allocated directly to family assistance without any compensation paid to staff.
AHF’s primary forms of assistance include:
• Covering medical expenses such as deductibles and co-insurance
• Providing medical equipment not covered by insurance, including specialty bikes, strollers, hearing aids, and related items.
• Funding specialized therapies that are not reimbursed by insurance
• Assisting with travel costs for medical care or educational conferences
• Making minor modifications to homes and vehicles
• Awarding academic scholarships to siblings
• Organizing eight to ten social events annually
• Addressing various other personal requests
With the ongoing support of the community, AHF continues to deliver meaningful assistance to many families.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We’ve received strong support from families and businesses. While volunteering has sometimes been challenging for our core organizers, we’ve successfully managed for 25 years.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Though I’m a retired special education teacher, AHF’s strength lies in its dedicated volunteers. Our network of supporters enables us to maximize our resources and services.
How do you think about happiness?
Family: The Heart of AHF
Throughout my life, I have cherished the bonds with my own family and friends, as well as the wonderful families I have met over the years through AHF. Our organization has always thrived by welcoming donors, businesses, and volunteers into the AHF family. This inclusive approach has been a cornerstone of our success for many years.
Our annual Friend Raiser Gala serves as a shining example of the family atmosphere we cultivate within AHF. The philosophy guiding our work is simple: if we make enough friends, financial concerns will diminish. This belief has been a blessing and has consistently supported us throughout our history.
Years ago, my daughter expressed to my wife and me that she felt our family was more special than others. We responded by saying that we hoped all families felt that way. She explained, “No, because of Matt and all we do for him, makes us different and life more special.” Her words have stayed with us, reminding us of the unique experiences and love that shape our family.
It is my hope that every family we support, and every family that supports AHF, experiences this sense of specialness in their own lives. Each family is truly important—not only to their loved ones but also to those of us who are fortunate enough to receive their support.
