Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Green.
Hi Katie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When Barber J and I met on August 1, 2013, he had been cutting hair for 11 and a half years, and I had been styling hair in Las Vegas for 13 and a half years. Our shared passion for the beauty industry sparked an immediate connection, and just three weeks later, we were engaged. By October of that same year, we were married. I continued my work in Las Vegas for another two and a half years while Barber J maintained his clientele at his small barbershop on Main Street in Parowan, Utah.
In 2015, the city of Parowan held a contest offering an old condemned building and its lot to the best local business proposal for just one dollar. Thanks to my husband’s skill, community involvement, and long-standing reputation, we won the bid. With tremendous help from the people of Parowan, we salvaged what we could, tore down the old structure, and officially broke ground by June 2016. We moved into our new space the Friday before Thanksgiving that same year. Renew reuse repurpose was the theme in combining both of our worlds mine from Vegas and his from Parowan to create the shop of our dreams—a classic barbershop in front, a retail space in the middle, and the
Beauty Rroom salon in back. Since then, Barber J has started mentoring apprentices, launched his own beard product line, and together we’ve had a wonderful team of assistants, nail techs, aestheticians, and stylists work alongside us over the past nine years. Along the way, we’ve also grown our family, welcoming three beautiful children since our marriage.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We had the pandemic to handle. Stay open or close was the question. our county had a directive not a mandate. We did decide to stay open and change the way that we operated. My husband went to appointments only instead of walk-ins and I took one client at a time instead of double booking. We also had the support of our sheriff, making sure that we were being a safe as possible. We were glad we stayed open. It was amazing how much people needed to talk about their worries through that time and still.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
we considers ourselves artists and creative. We’ve been self-employed both of us for over 20 years that itself as a feet the skills that go into barbering and cosmetology are beyond what most people would think you need to have some major business skills on top of people skills on top of being creative. The best part about our job we would say is the people that sit in our chair and learning all about them and their story because all of our stories are so unique we pride ourselves and having a shop with no gossip we all are welcome.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My husband would say “if it’s meant to be it’s up to me”, I do agree there’s no substitute for hard work. There’s nothing like investing in yourself and also the community and people around you. so hard work and kindness encompassed by integrity, those are very important characteristics that we have both gone by and felt helped us become and still become successful. Will you continue to always in our craft and in business and technology.
