Exploring Life & Business with Kevin Roberts of RR Hoophouses

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Roberts.

Hi Kevin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The idea really began around 2009–2010. My mom, who is an avid gardener and a Master Gardener, wanted a greenhouse of her own. After researching different options, she found plans for a Quonset-style hoop house and built a 24×24-foot structure in our yard.

Pretty soon, people started asking about it—how she built it, where they could get one, and whether we could build one for them too. At the time, I was studying engineering at BYU, so it felt like a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience and earn some extra income. I started helping construct these structures, and demand just kept growing.

From there, the business grew naturally. I eventually took full ownership and began refining and expanding the product line. Over the years, we introduced more options and developed our Gothic-style greenhouse, which has become one of our most popular and best-selling models.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Over the years, there were times when the business simply wasn’t sustainable enough for me to support myself full-time. In the early days, most of our work was installation-based—we didn’t offer kits yet—and I relied heavily on a few key family members to help with builds.

Eventually, those family members became unavailable, and every new season brought the same challenge: I had no trained help. It left me seriously questioning whether it was worth continuing. I couldn’t support myself or maintain employees year-round, and I often found myself torn between shutting everything down or pushing forward and hoping the right help would come along.

This cycle repeated for several years. But each time, I chose to keep going and look for solutions. Somehow, the right people always seemed to show up at the right moment. Over time, we evolved by shifting from mainly installations to offering kits, and that change has been transformative for the business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about RR Hoophouses?
Our most popular product is our Gothic-style hoop house, designed to withstand extreme weather conditions such as high winds and heavy snowfall. Our newest offering is the 8×10 Gothic-style greenhouse, perfect for those who don’t have the space or need for large-scale growing but still want to garden year-round.

A key thing our customers appreciate is that we are a family-owned and operated business. When you call, you’ll speak directly with the owner or the second in command. We take customer service personally—you’ll hear directly from us if any issues arise, and we will do our best to make sure you’re happy and that the product is working as it should.

My overall goal with this company is to provide high-quality greenhouses that enable people to grow for themselves year-round, giving them greater control over their food sources and health.
