Today we’d like to introduce you to Royce Porter.
Hi Royce, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from the University of Utah in 2014. My family and I moved to Roosevelt to start working at Uintah Basin Medical Center. After 10 years it felt like it was time to come home. While out there, I learned I loved growing programs and helping people gain access to healthcare that typically wasn’t provided. I started a maternal health program and would work with moms the day after birth in the hospital. This later turned into helping females after birth as well as past child bearing years help get their bodies back. The urologist also started sending me his patients as well since he was hearing how I was helping ladies decrease urinary accidents while staying non invasive. Since moving back to the Salt Lake Valley we wanted to continue this work. I do therapy either in the office, in the home, or virtually. We offer a cash based service with no waiting lists. Frequency is determined between myself and the client.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a journey of ups and downs. I’ve enjoyed my career immensely as I connect with people. There has always been successes and obstacles but I have always seen these bumps in the road as stepping stones to progress. This mindset has helped me expand beyond conventional approaches to therapy and thus being able to provide a more holistic approach.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an occupational therapy clinic that specializes in women’s health as well as ADHD. I have a certified perinatal therapist as well as a pregnancy/postpartum corrective exercise specialist. I believe recovering from pregnancy is more than just getting your muscles and pelvic floor back. It involves so much more such as social health, mental health, practical application, behavior retraining, and anything else that may arise from pregnancy. As I listen to my clients and what they are experience, we come up with real solutions to not only fixe the issue at hand, but to help prevent it in the future. Then if it does happen in the future, the skills learned with me will continue to help you overcome. I take a non internal exam approach and teach my clients how to do this on their own at home. This helps with any concerns of undressing and being examined while coming in for therapy visits and empowers my clients to have a connection with their body. Due to my cash based approach, I am able to see people quickly. I do not have wait lists and typically see people just 1x a week. Since I am able to also do outpatient services in the home or virtually, it helps when having little ones around. All this work is important for around pregnancy and delivery, but sometimes these issues persist and it is common for people to come who are tired of having to use the bathroom every time they pass a toilet in fear of not being able to make it to another one before having an accident. These services are meant to benefit clients from a wide age range. This has been so much fun to help provide relief and empowerment to so many people already.
Any big plans?
I want to continue to grow and help change the culture of what recovery from pregnancy should look like. I want to not only help those who are in the child bearing years but also beyond who want to take control of their bodies. As this is a growing area of interest, I want to create an environment where other occupational therapists can thrive and we can continue to be the holistic therapists we are trained to be in school.
