Meet Wesley Spargo of PhysioElite Sports Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wesley Spargo.

Wesley Spargo

Hi Wesley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my physical therapy clinic due to being fed up with the limitations that insurance companies impose on their providers. I care about giving my patients the highest quality of care to enable the fastest recovery and soonest return to sport. I had been an elite athlete myself in track & field until I retired after I competed in the 2024 Olympic trials in Australia, for the 400m Hurdles. I love sport, what it stands for and what you can learn from it, hence I love being actively involved in the local sports community and also the elite stage internationally, to help other athletes reach their full potential, regardless of what level they are striving for.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road. Obtaining a commercial lease is incredibly hard, especially when you’re looking for a smaller retail space and also when you’re starting out. Commercial realtors want “proof” that your business is profitable, which is difficult to show when you are trying to open your first business. Then the upfront cost of all of the equipment you need is substantial. In addition for me personally, I graduated PT school in Australia and the process to get your license transferred from another country over to the USA in order to practice is incredibly challenging and took almost three years to successfully complete. Only then could I start working/building my business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
This is primarily a sports-therapy practice. I am a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy, which is a certification awarded by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties to those who meet the requirements in their specialty area to practice an advanced form of the profession. I am known by my patients as a clinician who provides very prompt and effective care, leading to return to sport much sooner than regular clinics. Furthermore, I work for the United States Men’s National Handball Team, a member of the United States Olympic Committee, as their lead physical therapist. I provide sports medicine services for the team during training camps, World Championships, Pan American Games and Olympic Games. Readers should know that I have worked in very high levels of sport, including working with Olympic gold medalists and professional athletes, so they can trust that when they see me for musculoskeletal care, they are receiving an advanced service that has both the education and experience to match. I also only work one-on-one with patients for a full hour, so they will not be working with aides or assistants, they receive 100% of their care directly from their physical therapist. My clinic also offers post-therapy services, such as a cold plunge, sauna and vasopneumatic compression boots, which patients can use at their free-will before they leave the clinic, after their formal therapy session has concluded. While I personally don’t network with insurance companies directly, I accept HSA and FSA, and have provided superbills for patients to submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement with good results. Lastly, readers should know that the Utah is the first state in the U.S. to classify physical therapists as “primary care providers”, which in brief means that patients can access our services directly, without needing a physician’s referral. So you can book an appointment with us as soon as you need care.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Reputation. When you deliver the highest-quality of services with results in mind, your patients become your best marketing tool. They will tell others about you if they are in need of therapy. Reputation includes respect, empathy, active-listening and being goal/solution-oriented. These referrals enable patients to receive care that they may have never been able to receive otherwise, due to not knowing the right therapy services that would cater to their needs. I have seen countless patients who have seen multiple Doctors, PTs, ATC’s, Chiropractors and other health professionals and were unable to receive satisfactory results, and then after seeing me they were able to play their sport/activity again.
